Avoiding Common Mistakes When Growing Cannabis at Home – The Paper Towel Method to Sprout Cannabis Seeds

Welcome back to our cannabis cultivation series! In this installment, we’ll tackle a common mistake made during the germination phase. Common mistake #3 is all about the method you choose to sprout your cannabis seeds. Let’s explore why using the paper towel method may not be your best bet and what you should do instead.

What Is The Paper Towel Method?

The paper towel method is a popular choice for germinating cannabis seeds. It involves placing your seeds between damp paper towels until they sprout tiny roots and shoots. While this method can be successful, it has its downsides.

One significant drawback is the need to transfer the delicate sprouts to your grow bags or other growing mediums once they’ve germinated. This transfer process involves handling the fragile seedlings, which can result in damage to their delicate roots and shoots.

Seedlings are extremely vulnerable during their early stages. Any damage can set them back or, in some cases, lead to stunted growth or even plant death. The more you handle them, the greater the risk.

Sprout Seeds Directly In The Grow Bag Soil

To avoid the unnecessary handling and potential damage, it’s best to sprout your cannabis seeds directly in the grow bag soil. This method eliminates the need for transplanting and minimizes stress on the young seedlings.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:

  1. Fill a grow bag with soil and lightly compact until 1″ from top of the bag.
  2. Slowly pour 64oz of pH adjusted water over the surface area of the grow bag.
  3. Soak seeds at least 4 hours in some pH adjusted water.
  4. Push the tip of a pencil 1/4″ deep into the soil at the center of a grow bag.
  5. Using tweezers, place a seed into the indentation and lightly cover with soil.
  6. Spray water over the newly planted area soaking the soil around the seed.

By germinating your seeds directly in the grow bag soil, you provide a smooth transition from germination to the vegetative stage, reducing the risk of damage and ensuring your plants get off to a healthy start. Checkout the GROWCASE recipe that comes with the system for a more in depth guide.

Remember, the goal is to make the growing process as stress-free as possible for your cannabis plants, and starting them directly in their final growing medium is a step in the right direction.
